Pros

Friendly and helpful coworkers In theory, it is nice that Huntington aims to teach not just to the test (SAT, ACT) but to teach the skills and material necessary to do well on the test

Cons

Some shady practices - asking tutors to come in up to an hour early and stay late to finish paperwork, but you can only clock in 5 minutes before your shift and must clock out 5 minutes after your scheduled shifts ends; Also not paying for the hours completed in training until 3 months after you've been working at the center... Really poor materials. Full of typos, unclear explanations (unclear even for college grads, much less high school students struggling with the test) Low salary compared to similar positions (and you're not allowed to speak to parents at all, maybe for fear that the parents will realize that only a tiny portion of their thousands of dollars are going to tutors?)

Huntington Learning Centers Response

This former employee, who is a recent college grad and was to receive training for educational tutoring at Huntington, completed a telephone interview where among other things, hourly rates and policies were disclosed and discussed for mutual acceptability. Based on the phone interview, the employee was invited for an in-person interview. This employee was afforded an extensive in-person interview to determine suitability for the learning center teaching environment. All personnel policies were again clearly explained and hourly rates were confirmed. This employee was offered a position, and chose to accept! We were surprised that this employee quit abruptly after 12 hours of training and no independent teaching time, without speaking to the supervisor to discuss and clarify any information that was a concern, such as the perceived “unpaid time” and coming in early/staying late.” This was later clarified in an exit interview by phone with the employee, who acknowledged they should have spoken with the supervisor before rushing to judgment and quitting. As it turns out, the employee felt uncomfortable with, and therefore unsuited for, this type of teaching environment, regardless of rates, or typos and explanations in the teaching materials. Learning center teaching environments are certainly not for everyone. We live in a free market economy and one has the freedom of choice to take one’s labor and find the best opportunity. Learning Centers have certain labor rates they can afford to pay and these may not suitable for everyone.

Corporate reviews are true-learning by fear!

Pros

They pay you and the office nice.

Cons

The environment, especially in the Marketing dept is based on pressure and intimidation. There is not proper training, so you never get a chance to grasp the business and it's concepts before you're thrown into tough situations. It's not a happy or friendly place to spend 10 hours a day. The hours this group keeps are well beyond 9-5:30, more like 8:30-8:30pm and if you don't stay, your alienated. Not a culture of "Learning", that's for sure.

A lot of hours, little compensation, unethical franchise owners

Pros

Watching kids learn and grow is a rewarding experience. The curriculum, even though it is outdated does create results and academic accomplishments for the students.

Cons

Independent franchise owners can make or break the experience. Some people have no business owning a business. Especially those that are disorganized and unethical.
