Pros

Absolutely no prep work, pleasant to work one-on-one with students, pleasant work environment, initially I was given respect and encouragement by my boss, pleasant enjoyable co-workers. I took this job because it was low stress, and very close to where I live. I was also looking forward to working with older students after 7 years as a first grade teacher.

Cons

Very low pay, no control over which students are assigned, how many, or what schedule. The system is so rigid that I actually had very little input on the student curriculum, despite having years of recent experience as a credentialed teacher. I came to be frustrated with trying to meet the needs of my clients because the reading materials are also at least 10 years behind on their grade ranking. Every student I worked with was started on materials well below their actual instructional level, so there were many hours of wasted time on curriculum that was too easy. I don't think this was done for a profit motive, but that the materials are out of date. There is also a thick and complicated non-compete-clause. This is to keep you from jumping ship to another franchise, or leaving to establish your own private tutoring practice. They need to do this because the pay is so low. I won't go into details, but I was put into a situation where I had to seek legal advice, and it turns out that all non-compete clauses are illegal in California. So if all of the Huntington franchises in this state are using the same contract I signed, the non-compete clause is not enforceable. I'd like to assume that they are ignorant of the law, otherwise I would have to question their ethics.

Pros

Relatively easy job. Kind coworkers and students. They are pretty flexible with scheduling and you can usually get a decent amount of hours depending upon your availability.

Cons

They often call a day or two ahead of time to ask you to work more or not to come in. The "training" provided is minimal at best and no one really explains to you where anything is. They'll answer if you ask.
