Very low pay, no control over which students are assigned, how many, or what schedule. The system is so rigid that I actually had very little input on the student curriculum, despite having years of recent experience as a credentialed teacher. I came to be frustrated with trying to meet the needs of my clients because the reading materials are also at least 10 years behind on their grade ranking. Every student I worked with was started on materials well below their actual instructional level, so there were many hours of wasted time on curriculum that was too easy. I don't think this was done for a profit motive, but that the materials are out of date.
There is also a thick and complicated non-compete-clause. This is to keep you from jumping ship to another franchise, or leaving to establish your own private tutoring practice. They need to do this because the pay is so low. I won't go into details, but I was put into a situation where I had to seek legal advice, and it turns out that all non-compete clauses are illegal in California. So if all of the Huntington franchises in this state are using the same contract I signed, the non-compete clause is not enforceable. I'd like to assume that they are ignorant of the law, otherwise I would have to question their ethics.
