      Stale, Fear-Driven, and Political

      Pros

      The promise of contributing to the education and well-being of students. Free pizza every few months.

      Cons

      The owners operate a stale, fear-driven, political, and hierarchical organization, where employees – even senior managers – are frightened to express their points of view or assert their ideas for fear of the owners’ inevitably inconsistent and inappropriate response and reprisal to gestures of independence and originality. As a result, turn-over is exceedingly high, and those who do stay with the company are known for keeping their heads down (literally and figuratively) and mouths shut. Every meeting with the owners I took part in was followed by lengthy post-mortems and commiserations railing against the misguided edicts of the owners. Very little is accomplished as staff are bogged down with endless and fruitless meetings and unnecessary paperwork. These comments relate to employees. It should also be noted that Franchisees are disrespected and parents/students are looked upon as sources of revenue to be manipulated.

      Good part-time job for teachers

      Pros

      Students are motivated, lessons are planned for you, work schedule is very flexible, owners are helpful and encouraging, all staff are easy to work with.

      Cons

      The pay is the only downside. For one-on-one tutoring (which is quite intense, even when the students are good) $12 just is not proportinate to the work put in.
