Not what it once was

Pros

Adequate benefits package. Average pay for the area. A good profit share year can make the production floor pay more competitive.

Cons

1) Extremely toxic leadership across the board in production, at the lower levels. These are the type of people, with few exceptions and no exaggeration, that sit there doing nothing all day every day, right in front of their workers, in plain sight, yet have the gall to try to micromanage their associates. Production leadership, even though they contribute nothing of value, spend their free time (which is all their time) practically attacking the people who make Hypertherm 100% of its income, and it's insulting and demoralizing to say the least; and of course they make 50% more than most of their associates, which makes absolutely no sense. They sit there ALL DAY, laughing amongst themselves like joyful pigs at a trough, organizing football pools and checking email over and over and over. I'm not kidding when I say this describes about 80% of them. 2) An uncertain future. Hypertherm has zero economic moat. We make plasma or water based metal cutting tools. That's it. And you can ignore the wall full of patents. Nothing truly great has been patented by Hypertherm since Couch's original electrode. The technology is essentially the same. All it will take is one guy in a garage somewhere with a better idea on how to cut or form metal, and Hypertherm will be ruined overnight. 3) The lean and CIA culture breeds some dishonesty. I can't count the number of times I've heard someone say this, that, and the other thing are increasing efficiency 10, 20, 30%, or more. It's almost all total lies, of course. These lazy leaders need to justify their jobs somehow, after all. Add it all up and over the last 10 years we're like 350% more efficient than ever before! 4) We hemorrhage workers to other companies on a regular basis. More and more work gets piled onto the good workers every year for no reward, and less and less gets asked of the Lead Operators and low level management. See above. Toxic leadership. That might be starting to change in some areas, but it's too little too late. We've lost a lot of good people already, and EVERYONE I know is on the lookout for other opportunities. (5) Outside hires always questionable. Hypertherm often hires its lead operators from outside the company, rather than promoting from within. This demoralizes the entire production floor on a regular basis. None of the outside hires have ever worked out well, so far. Just because someone interviews well does not make them effective in the workplace. And of course NOT ONE of these outside hires has any real idea what is going on in their area. I cannot recommend starting a career at hypertherm in production at this time. If you are just starting out, you are better off elsewhere.

Pros

-100% employee-owned (3 year to vest) -annual profit sharing -safe working environment -mostly great people to work with -great location if you enjoy the outdoors -no state income tax in NH -onsite primary care with no co-pay and walk-ins available -onsite fitness facility available 24 hours to employees

Cons

-shrinking opportunities -company coddles low-performing individuals -company cares more about CSR initiatives then getting actual work done (not uncommon to see people going for "wellness-walks" when there are projects with slipping deadlines that need to be focused on -low paying compared to other companies (they claim the total rewards is better than other companies, and certain parts are, but profit sharing is a gamble and can be frustrating during a low-profit year when you work all year hoping the bonus will make up for getting underpaid throughout the year and then realize profit sharing doesn't offset what you could have made elsewhere).

Pros

You see all the awards and articles on Hypertherm. But, the truth is this was a company that used to be "a great place to work" as many of their awards say they are. As one of the larger employers in the state that is only a 45 year old company, with many employees working 20 plus years in this organization, one would think this would be a place you would want to retire at. There are truly some great people in this organization. Many of the lifer's are banking on their stock options to be able to retire. Some are stuck there and do not want to change. The profit sharing and stock options are good, provided you negotiated a decent salary coming in, as they try to sell the total compensation package to you, rather than focusing on your base salary. But, your profit sharing is a percentage of your base salary so you want to do well negotiating coming in.

Cons

This company needs to understand how their reputation has been getting worse, especially since the Couch's cashed out. Hypertherm builds a decent plasma cutter, but upper management doesn't care about the associates any longer. Over the many years I was there I saw a lot of people quit or get fired that had not been there long. It's all about sales and profit now. You are not valued unless you are an engineer it seems. They have a zero lay off policy but they fire people without too much concern. Also, they have the good old boy network in many different departments so not many people are held accountable. Having a 100% associate owned company is great when you can use that as a loop hole to pay zero federal taxes. But, when you have a board of directors that are making decisions about acquisitions and the future of the business does 100% associate ownership really mean anything to an associate? It doesn't make you anymore important or anymore valuable. You might be able to have a cleaner work station with your suggestions...This place is very political and the higher you move up the worse it is. It takes a committee to make any decisions. When things goes wrong the fingers start pointing all over, there is a horrible lack of accountability. The bottom line is that this company has a very difficult culture to work in and who you know or suck up to you will get you much further than knowing your stuff and getting the job done. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone unless you were desperate for benefits or starting out your career. Everything moves so slow and if you do not drink the cool aid you will be left out of the clicks.
