Pros

IBM is a recognized name that will help you get your next job. In some parts of the company, IBM may be an industry leader (this assertion is not true for the consulting business).

Cons

IBM is a massive company. You will not be singled out for much praise for great work. If you consistently get above average ratings, you won't get big raises (expect about 1.5%, so less than normal inflation, even raises for promotions are small), you won't have any opportunity to improve your skill set (since you will be in the same role for a few years...it's IBM's way of doing things), and you won't have the opportunity to move within the company (not unique to IBM). Overall, IBM is a place where you are expected to sit back and slowly climb the corporate ladder. Follow instructions and you can make it up at a slow pace. If you have any ambition, go somewhere else.

Pros

Being in alliance sales, IBM can provide momentum for large deals. GBS can be help if managed correctly. Many products and solutions for package sales.

Cons

Constant layoffs that happen every quarter. The alliance and partner divisions seems to take the brunt of these resource actions. Also targeted for layoffs â?¦ older employee (over 50).

Pros

Company with a big name, looks good on your resume. Solid benefits, especially medical. Would help you with immigration issues (e.g., doing a Green Card for you), if it is required.

Cons

Huge bureaucracy. The company tries to squeeze more and more from its employees: most departments that I saw were understaffed and overloaded. The employee population is aging: fewer young people want to work at IBM. Too much management, too few people doing real work. The company has a very complex and burdensome work accomplishment/assessment yearly cycle, so that employees mostly think about how their yearly review will turn out. Hence a lot of time is taken by the efforts to make the review results look good, rather then solving the real problems. IBM T.J.Watson Research Center used to be a great research lab up until 2002-2003, now it more resembles a subsidiary of IBM Software Division, at best, or a bunch of software engineers used to be thrown to plumb holes of other division's lagging projects, at worst.
