Pros

I was paid fairly, and in the olden days (say before 1997) allowed a lot of leeway toward education and professional enrichment. Salary, bonuses, and even awards were more than fairly given in my case. The experience I had at IBM really launched my professional career, most of my experience before was in unrelated fields.

Cons

Over time, management becomes more "metrics driven" - which is to say, short sighted. Oh how many things we did twice because they weren't realistic about the scope of the work, or how it fit strategically. Perhaps that's because much of the "boots on the ground" management has no idea what their underlings do. Also, those awards and bonuses seem pretty arbitrary when you look at the big picture, seems if your own management isn't strong, your dept will never get their share - no matter how hard they work. In the end, they'll either sell your division, move your job to India or China, or just plain lay you off. Everybody I know still in "the company" is watching their backs, just waiting for the axe to fall.

Pros

- Great technical resources available - Opportunity to learn new skills (assuming you get the time) - Ability to work from home - Some great people / colleagues

Cons

- Upper management does not care about anything but profits - Constant restructuring putting you in places you don't want to be. If you like your current role, don't get used to it, because you'll eventually be forced in to another role you don't really want - After almost 4 years of employment, I received no raises even though I was a top performer each year - In constant fear of layoffs. I lost many good friends over the span of numerous resource actions. Some of these people were excellent and highly technically skilled, however they didn't play the politics game as well as the people who were kept. - IBM cares more about the process than the people

Pros

IBM offers good starting salaries and benefits packages compared with other companies in Tulsa. Their vacation plan is generous compared with other employers in Tulsa.

Cons

IBM does not give meaningful pay raises. The starting salary is good but without raises that at the very least, allow employees to keep up with the rate of inflation, dissatisfaction grows and employees leave. IBM is offshoring alot of their accounting work and because of this, their have been layoffs. I would advise avoiding working for IBM in the US.
