Pros

- You'll work with a group of smart, passionate people - If you don't get sick, you get a good amount of PTO - Very flexible work/life balance, generally do not have to work long hours

Cons

- Low pay. Salaries are not competitive, regardless of how much ICF tells you they are. "Bonuses" for junior staff are a joke ($350 maybe once or twice a year, if you're luck). ICF typically hires people who are so passionate about their work that they'll take a pay cut. - High turnover - "Shareholders-first" mentality among senior staff, which can alienate mid-level and junior staff - Lots of hierarchy within management, who expect you to fall in line - General relentless usage of the term "innovative" despite no understanding of how to actually be innovative

Old Company Struggling to Adapt to the New Economy

Pros

Flexible work schedule. Intelligent people. Many good opportunities available to individuals that can negotiate the office politics. Focused mainly on the public sector or industries that used to be government owned.

Cons

Many intelligent people but all management lacks leadership skills, strategic thinking, and office politics management expertise. Most work is for government and the company operates like the bureaucracy that it serves. Pay is not competitive in any markets they operate in and junior staff are overworked. A dinosaur struggling to operate in the modern economy, more focused on marketing themselves on what they are not, than focusing on becoming competitive in their markets. No ambition to be the best in their field. Happy to be second, third or fourth, or operate in markets where there is no competition and no growth prospects.

Disclaimer: ICF is a large company. The pros mentioned here only relate to only one department of one of ICF's many divisions. Results will vary Great opportunities to be involved with challenging and stimulating projects Chances to work with and learn from a lot of really smart and experienced people Decent work-life balance Adequate benefits

Cons

Again, this only counts for one department within one division of ICF. Subpar compensation Mundane, entry-level work can often overshadow larger and higher-profile projects and tasks Little to no upward mobility or career advancement, unless you are willing to sacrifice your personal life. Even then, promotions and pay raises are few and far between. Projects and initiatives often fall prey to political divisiveness and infighting.
