Pros

The salary and benefits are decent compared to other consulting firms. Staff are very hard working and caring, from the research assistants to the CEO. Many employees have been around for 5, 10, 15, or even 25+ years, which I think says something about the company's ability to retain talent. My division is very flexible about working from home, appointments, and telecommuting.

Cons

The company is extremely focused on its bottom line and creating shareholder value at the expense of the employee. I understand why companies need to focus on business development, but it can be extremely stressful as someone who is a junior staff member (and not in a finance or business development line of business) who is supposed to be maintaining high utilization on my projects while also being pressured to bring new business to the company. Job-specific training is almost nonexistent, even for entry-level employees without much work experience. Working on multiple projects can become extremely unwieldy given that it's not always clear who is managing which aspects of any given project. Some managers are great, but many are unprofessional and do not outline clear performance expectations or give good guidance while others micromanage to an extreme. I think it depends on which division you are in, but it can be very easy to become pigeonholed in your job and not have much room for career development and growth. Management will sing the praises of work life balance, but when it actually comes down to it, full time staff are expected to put in overtime regularly or risk not doing well on their projects.

Not a women/family-friendly company

Pros

There are a lot of smart people who work there, and the work they do is really interesting. The culture is very collegial. They have a great COO and CEO who have a clear understanding of the company's mission and how to win work.

Cons

Women, specifically in the corporate services departments, are not treated well. Management tends to shun women who want to have families. They also have policies that are not family-friendly and have cut PTO for everyone below the Director level. Management does not practice what they preach. They told staff that everyone was getting cuts when director and above stayed the same with at least 4 weeks of PTO. They are so bottom-line focused that they can't see the forest for the trees. They don't value hard work as much as they value the loudest voice in the room. They are more interested in the number of people/dollars they can cut than how they can make people more efficient at what they do to produce a higher return.

Pros

the paycheck comes on time, taxes are withheld correctly. i honestly can't say much in the positive. i love the project i work on but if it ended, i would be gone in a heartbeat. there is an attempt to drum up loyalty but with words only, when it comes to pay or benefits - look elsewhere

Cons

constantly changing HR policies which result in fewer benefits to employees - for instance our paid time off was slashed impacting the employees who had been with the company longest. clearly management is fine with 2-4 years of work from people straight out of school. no clear career development/promotion track - promotions are shrouded in secrecy as are pay levels. the company greedy at every turn since the main obligation is to shareholders and not employees - for instance contract will be held up until just after the quarterly earnings report so the books look good
