Pros

Secure position once 12 month probation completed. Good vacation and sick time benefits. Off weekends and closed nights.

Cons

Glued to phone - difficult to even have a bathroom break. Major government hiring took place from 1998 to 2009 so hard to move up.

Pros

The hours are flexible. The schedule is flexible. The management allows a good balance of work and life, which is good for people with kids or elderly parents. Management provides training to learn to do things better. Things are not rushed, which allows people to do quality work.

Cons

Congress freezes the budget, which creates hiring freezes and sporadic recruitment and slow technology updates. The computers and operating systems are old, which makes some work tough and also creates security risks. The IRS has public relations problems from the tax exempt scandal, which hurt morale. People don't like taxes, so many don't like the IRS.
