Pay or raises are not transparent, nor do they reflect experience at the company. I ended up "manager" of employees who as newcomers, made more than I did even after having been at the company for years. That can be demoralizing, especially when a request for a raise was met with a new title and responsibility but no increased pay due to "tight budgets". Presumably, the company was prioritizing volume growth but the quality of service and internal culture suffered as a result.
