Pros

Benefits. Great feeling to make a difference. No evenings and weekends.

Cons

Low salaries with no merit increase. Don't promote from within. I've applied for two positions that are higher up and both positions went to external candidates. I don't see room to grow here. There is also a lot of turnover because they keep changing policy. Doesn't value diversity beyond recruiting.

Overworked, underpaid, little chance for innovation

Pros

The job market is impossible. I get to change lives. Getting paid to read and grade and talk to students is a pretty sweet gig, especially when you get benefits to do so.

Cons

I teach a book someone else picked--almost always--have no chance to negotiate my raises--even when I'm doing more than others in my dept.--and I get raises that average 2%, which is to say, "Inflation and cost of living ensure that I'm making less each year." Education is rigged against the poor . . . and their professors. No news here, really.

Pros

The wonderful co-workers who care about the students are the best part of working at Ivy Tech. The retirement benefits are good.

Cons

The college is ran like a business - you are expected to keep your office door open all of the time, or, heaven forbid, a closed door means you do not care about Ivy Tech. They expect you to be "on duty" on evenings as well as weekends and require you to obtain their permission to work other part-time jobs. You are under their total control once you work for them. They say their ethics are high, yet the way they treat employees makes you wonder if they know what ethics are. The place is top-heavy in management and full of office politics. If you do not say "hello" to certain people in a certain way you will get reprimanded by your supervisor. The insurance offerings are now full of high-deductible and co-pays. The finances are shaky, as enrollments continue to decline. The place is obsessed with data - sometimes if students complain they will tell you to pass the student even if the student has a failing grade.
