Great colleagues, awful organization
Pros
I had a great group around me, including staff of 12 that I managed. I stayed longer than I should have because of them. My direct boss also gave me a lot of learning opportunities, trusted me implicitly, and was a true partner.
Cons
There is NO career progression or opportunity to advance unless you are connected politically to someone in the Chancellor’s hallway or systems office - certain campus leaders only care about keeping costs down, covering their own butts, and looking good to SO. I took on a Director-level position with a high level of responsibility, more than doubled the size of the staff, hit and exceeded all metrics for success, and was available 24/7/365 to solve problems and resolve emergencies, but had zero opportunity to advance and was limited at an Asst Dir position. Indy campus leadership does not believe in promoting from within to senior roles and will always hire folks from the outside without regard to experience and expertise that exists in house. If you want to move forward in your career, log a couple years here (at least 2 to get the full vest in the 10% retirement contribution) and then look to move in.
