Friendly co-workers and staff Fairly relaxed environment

Cons

Low pay No job security Micro-management by the excess number of administrators Silly rules to keep employees under control (power trip) Constant changes to systems so as soon as you learn one system, it changes Did I mention low pay Read the fine print, or you'll get screwed Phony smiles from some folks Cost of living increase is what they consider raises. They won't let FT faculty teach FT in the summer, even at adjunct pay, screwing us. Wasteful spending by central office.

Pros

You get to teach in a subject you love. As an adjunct, you are outside of most of the politics. Compensation is good, but very low if you take into consideration that you will probably be driving to several campuses. Most of the students (especially the returning adults) are working hard to improve their lives and appreciate good teaching.

Cons

The pointless activities increase every semester. In addition to teaching and grades, you have to attend seminars, take online training, submit student progress reports, and enter attendance. Driving (especially in winter) cuts into how much you earn per hour. The rules change constantly about how many classes you can teach.
