Pros

Great co-workers Fun work environment Learned a lot of good decorating skills Flexible hours

Cons

Management expects you to be a machine, and is generally unappreciative of work done, only focusing on what wasn't finished. I busted my butt for six years being the head, and usually only, decorator and never felt appreciated by upper management. Saw a lot of young part timers come and go because payroll refused to give them more than 12 hours a week at 8$/hr. No wonder they would leave. After 6 years, averaging 30 hours a week, my pay only went up by 2$ an hour.

Unreliable Job

Pros

Depending on the manager Jewel can be a great place to work for. Most of the staff is friendly and easy to get along with. You can pick what days your are available to work and what hours you are available. The hiring process is relatively easy. You receive a discount, vacation time and sick time. Being in a union can be both positive and negative. The union is not that useful since they allow Jewel to take advantage of employees. I really enjoyed my fellow employees it is really too bad.

Cons

Jewel is constantly changing store managers! I have no idea what their problem is but if you are full time or management you are most likely to get transferred. The hours and days you work are too unpredictable. If you have any kind of bills to pay you can't rely on this job. One week I would work 40 hours and the next 20 hours. Jewel is far behind on pay. They need to start paying their workers pay they can actually live on and pay some bills. There needs to be laws passed against companies taking advantage of employees like Jewel. Back 20 years ago I am sure Jewel was a far better place to work for. There is no excuse for constant differing schedules week to week. And what is with the pay? If you have been at Jewel 20 yrs then you are getting paid well. This is exactly why we need laws to protect the worker against low wages and low hours.
