Pros

The majority of the employees are friendly and foster a pleasant working environment. Pay is competitive with other small companies in the DMV area.

Cons

The CEO does not have a college degree or the experience to hold the title. Understandably Gail Urso was put in this position in order for the company to qualify as a small woman owned business allowing them special privileges from the government. A huge misrepresentation to clients and employees. Paid time off is very limited when you dismiss the holidays that are included in the numbers. Promotions are not likely, but a stepping stone company to firms such as CACI, SAIC and Booz Allen. The Melbourne, Florida office was opened as a personal financed move for the CEO and President to their new residence. I, and many others are of the opinion this is an all for quick profit and personal benefit then for the good of the company growth and employees.

Good Company, with some flaws

Pros

The people at the company are very nice and they do seem to care about your success. Everyone, for the most part, is very helpful if you need assistance with something.

Cons

The PTO is awful. You must use 10 of your designated 22 days on holidays such as Christmas, New Years Day, Thanksgiving, etc. Pay could be better.

We sincerely appreciate the kind comments about the positive work environment we strive to create and maintain. Regarding the PTO comment, it is fully explained in the offer letter each perspective employee accepts and then again at new hire orientation. The company uses an industry standard paid time off (PTO) approach whereby all PTO is in one bucket of available paid leave. New hires start with 22 days annually and that increases over time with longevity. Each new employee is advised that they start with 22 PTO days per year, that 10 of those are designated Federal holidays; leaving 12 days a year (2.4 weeks) to use as the employee needs. Unlike many companies where employees have to wait a year to accrue and use PTO, at KMS employees begin accruing PTO immediately and are free to use it after their first 90 days of employment. The rest of our benefits are available on a cafeteria style basis where each employee has the opportunity to pick and chose what they want. When it comes to medical and dental the company cost sharing contribution far exceeds the industry average. In addition, and unlike most of our peers, KMS has a company funded retirement plan with the 401(k) as its platform. That retirement plan invests real cash into each and every qualified employees retirement every year, regardless of whether they chose to defer money into the 401(k) or not. We also strive to ensure all employees are competitively compensated. Compensation is determined based on an individuals qualifications to include education, experience, security clearance level, and other factors. KMS uses qualified outside sources to advise the company regarding competitive compensation and we follow that guidance religiously. Thank you.

We appreciate the kind comment regarding no grief from management. KMS is a professional services consulting business that sells expert advisory & assistance services to the Federal Government under labor hour contracts. We agree that under the affordable care act the cost of healthcare has gone up, as a small business we have no ability to change that dynamic and can only react to it. The 401(k) is managed by John Hancock and funded by the company for the benefit of ALL ELIGIBLE EMPLOYEES on a profit sharing basis, regardless of whether they make a salary deferral contribution of their own or not. KMS has never had a 401(k) match. The profit sharing retirement contribution by the company for the benefit of the employees has always been 3% or higher of total salary dollars each and every year. Over the last two years it has averaged 5.88%. It is explained in the benefits summary provided to all new hire employees as follows, "The KMS 401(k) plan is available for participation to all qualified employees at their date of hire. In addition to salary deferrals, the company may make annual discretionary contributions on either a profit sharing basis and/or a matching contribution basis equal to a uniform percentage of the amount of salary deferral."
