Pros

The content and test prep materials are some of the best in the business. For a large corporation, they are pretty responsive and helpful. There is some legitimate teaching and management talent and the professional development program is strong.

Cons

I was told by multiple supervisors that I was one of the "top 5 SAT instructors in New England" yet when I left I was making $23/hr, putting me on par with college kids painting houses. When I was given a much more lucrative and fulfilling opportunity, my supervisors cited corporate policy in being unequivocally unhelpful, if not deliberately in the way of my moving on. Kaplan will tell you without prompting multiple times that it is about helping students and improving lives, yet they operate as a for-profit corporation and will bleed families dry and shortchange teachers at every possible turn. Certain supervisors and management types posses a sort of arrogance that would get eaten alive in traditional classroom settings, and what is considered "teaching" is usually just working off a glorified script with small windows for creativity. Management can sound very creepy in how much they both serve and drink the Koolaid. If you are an educator of any worth, find another opportunity.

Pros

Years ago Kaplan followed a mantra to do what is right for the student. You were not micromanaged, received bonuses for unsolicited customer comments and had a chance at quarterly bonuses. You could earn comp days for good attendance and were encouraged to do your best on every single phone call. Things were getting better with the implementation of Salesforce and if you had a good idea and were in with the right people your voice could be heard.

Cons

Read the above and then realize all that is gone. Kaplan is going through a massive transition that started two years ago and is still going on. They have closed down a majority of their centers, pushed for online education (which isn't bad but provide the product at a reasonable price), and closed down their main office in NYC and moved to Orlando. Everything has become based on numbers and metrics which is not bad but the soul and backbone of this company is gone. Okay you get cake on or around your birthday....and then what? Education is a low paying industry but raises of 1 or 2% are a little ridiculous. Recognition of talent is non existent. In my pros section notice I mentioned if you were in with the right people than your voice could be heard. Well not many people have that opportunity. Come to work, do your job, do not question what metric means what and go home.
