Pros

If you're lucky, you run into other individuals in similar roles who are great people; efficient in their duties and genuinely cares about the students that they work with. In my current role, there's a bit of flexibility that is allowed as far as set hours each day and working remotely. But that's as far as the pros go

Cons

Where do I begin? Management is incompetent; nothing is communicated well to "lower-level" employees; false promises and hot air is continuously spewed through excessively long conference calls and e-mails. Most of the positions ask for at least a bachelors degree when pay does not match AT ALL. There are select favorites (that are too incompetent) throughout the company that get ahead, while the rest continue to drown in a situation that can't improve.

Pros

The other teaching staff was fine, and most of the students were great (some a total delight). The materials and curricula were acceptable.

Cons

The parent company (Washington Post Group) used the Kaplan ESL program as a cash cow. They never invested one penny in upkeep or materials, would not allow ESL teachers into the 401k plan, and intentionally kept all teachers just below the minimum where they would have had to pay benefits. To penny-pinch on costs, they made students "rent" books, and if any marks were made in the book, the student had to buy it (at $50, which was over the cover price). I was happy with what I was doing, and the impact I had on the students, but I felt terrible that I was a party to ripping them off at every opportunity.

Lacking leadership

Pros

Excellent compensation, vacation, and benefits package. Growth potential is OK, however transitioning between Kaplan units is nearly impossible.

Cons

Extremely poor communication. Campus-level departments regularly try to implement new strategies for success, however the Business Solutions and IT departments do not communicate effectively to ensure a smooth transition. This lack of communication has caused delays in business operations and actual failures when submitting information to accrediting agencies. Also, Kaplan tends to retain poor employees with Director-level supervisors simply making excuses for their lack of performance.
