Pros

Kaplan is full of young, smart and hard-working people. Because it is such a large company, there are lots of opportunities for movement between divisions so it's a great place for someone in his/her early to mid-20s. Also, because the company is focused on all levels of education (elementary through college), there's always something big happening that keeps things interesting.

Cons

The size of the company has its downsides as well - namely, that there people are Kaplan who have been there forever and seem to somehow be protected. Also, the workload tends to get overwhelming because the company always seems to be understaffed.

Pros

The success stories! When a student has an amazing score increase and gets into the program of their choice, it validates what we do. The staff I work with are, for the most part, really interested in doing what they can to help our students get to the next level. I have a considerable amount of freedom in my job to be creative in how I plan, execute, and solve problems. I don't have a direct supervisor on-site, so there is quite a bit of flexibility and independence in my work day, and I can work from home if I need to.

Cons

The pay is terrible. In terms of career advancement, moving up is difficult without either devoting your entire life to Kaplan, and/or uprooting your whole life and moving locations. We are constantly understaffed - the amount of work far exceeds the number of staff to complete it. Turnover is very high in field positions. The results that are expected are unrealistic in light of the resources provided. Resources are not distributed equally, and there is not much offered in the way of incentive for accomplishing goals/results. Recent changes have all but eliminated the chance to receive a bonus and/or an annual raise.

Pros

Teaching at Kaplan is a good part time job for students in either college or grad school. Decent number of hours each week. I taught about 8 hours each week during classes but then around 40 during break. Starting pay of $22 per hour is not bad comparatively and you use to be able to move the pay scale pretty quickly.

Cons

Bad management at all levels beyond center academics; primarily due to incompetence but also just poor management structure and poor human resource management. Full time employees are all over worked and under paid. Cost cutting across the company means most employees do the job of three positions. Recently froze employee salaries, banning merit raises unless under "special" circumstances. Focus too much on the business (i.e. making more money) rather than improving the product or the service.
