Pros

I can only speak for the department I'm currently working in (and about to leave), but Key as a whole is an up and coming bank. They will likely achieve their goal and become the largest regional bank in the U.S...maybe. If you're looking for an opportunity and you want to grow your financial service career, Key is not a bad place. However, there are a lot of issues with the department I was brought into, and I'll summarize below.

Cons

-Possibly the most toxic work environment I've ever been a part of -Work/life balance is not a concept Key is familiar with, nor do they really care if it's something you're trying to achieve -If you're a salaried employee, they will work you to the bone and will not care if you're burning out. They just don't. I would NOT take a salaried position with this bank unless they're paying you six figures up front. -HR misled me on my bonus eligibility -The Key culture is very difficult to navigate. The individuals at the Cleveland HQ make no qualms about the fact that they look down on their Buffalo counterparts. It's ridiculous, especially when you consider that - based on my experience - those in Buffalo I worked with were miles ahead of my Cleveland counterparts in terms of performance and productivity. -The training for my position was non-existent and I was "thrown to the wolves" very early on -If you have questions, no one will answer them. Finding help/procedures/ANY kind of information from your department ABOUT your department is almost impossible -Key's systems are from the stone age, and if they don't get up to speed on technology they will never be the biggest U.S. regional bank. There's so much manual processes that it's enough to make you go crazy -Very, very stressful atmosphere -My manager did not provide me any feedback, and actually got defensive when I asked for what his expectations were of me in my role (but he very early on talked about possible "disciplinary action") - very confusing -You will probably never know how you're performing, and that's a feature of the bank's management, not a bug -Medical is a joke -401k vesting only takes place after 4 years. If you're at this bank for 4 years you deserve stock options, not just 401k vesting. -Favoritism. Favoritism everywhere. -Just not a fit for me culturally. Like I said - I believe that other departments at Key are probably great, and I wish I could have stayed on longer to build my career there, but when it all added up the situation became untenable for me. Be very, very careful before you accept an offer there. Ask as many questions as possible during your interviews.

High pressure sales

Pros

Local bank engaged within the communities they serve and as of late, they seem to be top in the market regarding offers for lending, deposits and new checking accounts. Benefits are great, especially the PTO and paid holidays. Most full time positions receive 4 weeks PTO from the start along with 10 or so paid holidays. Time off is very generous and that is about it for "pros."

Cons

The technology is very much out of date and the consolidation of some programs and other services is questionable. The consolidation of programs certainly does not make it any easier or convenient for customers. The online banking/mobile banking platform is still a far cry from other competitors that have much better online banking platforms. If you're in a sales role, such as a Personal Banker, then be prepared for high levels of stress to meet goals that seem impossible to meet and having to push the HelloWallet product on every customer. Even though some goals have been lowered in light of the Wells Fargo scandal, be prepared for high levels of stress to meet and exceed goals by the Area Retail Leader (ARL). In addition to the stressful sales environment, Personal Bankers should expect to also run a teller window more then they should. The staffing model is frustrating and should be a red flag when on the first day on the job you get an email from the retail branch executive explaining philosophy on the staffing models. Tellers are typically part time hours between 20 and 30. Lead tellers are typically full time. Part time tellers don't last long because they often find a better career elsewhere that offers more hours and benefits, leaving branches short on staff. Internal career opportunities are tough to come by. Internal careers are the typical "need to know someone" if you plan to apply for a job outside of retail banking regardless of your qualifications. Salary is below industry average for some sales roles; however, they recently raised the minimum wage for all positions for $15/hour. There is also a clear communication breakdown between some departments. If you're working loans, be prepared to fight tooth and nail to get anything through to the underwriters as trying to get a loan to the final approval status.

Rotational Risk Analyst Program (Rotational Analyst)

Pros

Thorough base training in the rotational program, salary and bonus, and a great culture. I enjoy Key as whole and would recommend it to others, especially as a full time analyst (post rotational program). I just have a few issues with the rotational program itself.

Cons

The rotational program for Risk Management (non-quantitative) is poorly managed and some of the rotation placements do not add any valuable work experience at all. The places that do add valuable experience can only take 1-2 analysts so 8 analysts are always left floundering for 6 months with no real work.
