Pros

Remote work and decent pay. Chicago and St. Petersburg folks have the option of going into the office if they want. Work life balance can be easy to maintain if you set firm boundaries. There are the standard tech perks, like learning budgets and unlimited PTO that people actually use, and leadership encourages you to use it. There are some areas of high functionality depending on what team you’re on, your area of expertise, and who you report to.

Cons

There is a lot of churn around teams. The purpose of teams is not clear, and role clarification is not clear either.
There is a lot of firefighting and heroism, and people are rewarded more for their ability to put out fires than they are for creating long-term solutions. Case in point, there was a large fire put out last year and the people who put out the fire were all given bonuses, while the people working on the long-term solution was insulted and then the team was disbanded.

Front end work and engineers are not valued as highly as back end. The culture has improved, but is still biased toward back end.

Pros

Remote organization a plus during COVID. My teammates have been exceptional to work with: supportive, kind, and hard working people dedicated to solving problems. Good work/life balance.

Cons

Kin touts diversity and inclusion as a core value, but it is simply something to be talked about, and never to be followed-through on. If you ask why, HR says it's a "leading question" that they don't want to talk about. Compensation isn't the worst, but you can certainly make more money somewhere else with a lot less headache and frustration. Benefits aren't anything to write home about. If you work toward a promotion, you have a better chance of achieving it if you are white. Alternatively, you can easily take on a team title for extra responsibility, but with no extra compensation. Kin is not invested in the growth of their employees. Leadership is extremely hands off. The key to success is: ship your tickets, don't ask too many questions, and don't make anything their problem. Kin claims it has a blameless culture, which translates to no one gets blamed until something goes wrong - and it's rarely leadership to blame. Management has also demonstrated seriously questionable behaviors regarding people of color, where making discriminatory and racist comments is only the tip of the iceberg. A job at Kin is just a layover on the way to a real software company.

Great Place to work

Pros

Work from Home Base plus commission Its a pretty laid back place to work not overly stressful and if you put in the work you will be rewarded. Working from home can be tough but the structure keeps you focused. Paid training and licensing

Cons

Working from home can sometimes make communication tough so it may be a little bit until you get an answer. The job is pretty repetitive so it can get boring at times. Its still a new company so a lot changes which can also be a pro.
