Pros

Great benefits, stability, and internal transferring, and opportunities to do some meaningful work helping disadvantaged populations

Cons

Not many true promotional opportunities, and a vast difference in generational work styles. Millennials need to be prepared for rigid thinking from long time employees

Pros

Overall extremely dedicated staff, very high caliber work and commitment to public service. Always seeking innovative programs. Results driven. At times work long hours without extra compensation.

Cons

Management not at all progressive; cover-your-ass approach to "leadership". Can only speak for the department I was in, but there was a strong tendency to play favorites in giving promotions. I happened to be one who did well in the organization, but was never comfortable with some of the excellent staff who were left behind because they just did their job well but didn't play up to the managers.

Pros

pay, benefits, lots of paid time off

Cons

Poor management. Most managers have worked here so long that they have no idea how to be an effective, engaging manager. Most are only concerned with looking good to their bosses and have no idea how to lead a team of employees. Deemed a good employee if the work unit "gets no complaints" about you. Old school managers roll their eyes at lean and process improvement initiatives. To move up (promotion), you have to be liked and connected. Lots of lip service to lots of "values."
