Pros

Good pay and benefits. Some departments have great programs and assignments...some even have great commraderie among employees! The current elected Executive is more management oriented than the last.

Cons

Top down management, hiring based on who likes you, reinvent the wheel mentality, senior-level management positions are political appointments and may not be 'best-in-class'. Some unions rule the roost...the needs to be more partnerships and what is good for the citizens, not just employees. Management/Services are not based 'best practices' or 'systems thinking' models.

Pros

If you want a structured routine work setting this is it Union shop; benefits are protected Many dedicated, reasonably talented and pleasant colleagues An organization overall with progressive goals & aspirations Salaries (all published online, search "bloom king county") don't compete with private sector but great benefits, and earn a portion of state pension even after five - ten years or so Stay long enough and promotion should come; also there will be a big-exodus out of there as a bubble of people retires Active attempts happen off and on to improve leadership and work culture

Cons

Aging workforce not engaged in social media - 15000 employees and so few reviews here! Old school (or no school) style of management - with resulting "compete any way at all to be the winner" behaviors of some staff, while most staff adapt by just going with the flow Experienced and good people in the workforce - but they are much affected by the layers and layers of bureaucracy (much of it required by law and other portions of government) and sheer arrogant lack of interest in employees' input A culture supporting a couple of layers throughout of highly paid managers who do more to obstruct than act, if they do much at all. Many protect their turf and each other. Workplace bullying (look up the definition) definitely happens there with damage control to contain it. Many lay-offs as county gets smaller and revenues lessen County exec as boss; likely a cool dude- they exec's are elected every 4 years and inherit the workforce and its long-time culture
