Pros

Despite what has been written by one particularly bitter individual, the Melbourne office of Kleinfelder is a great place to work. A mid sized consultancy in an open office, there is a strong sense of camaraderie and support. The doors to senior management are always open, and whilst there can be lots of talk and progress can sometimes be slow, there is a genuine feeling of a team that is working to carve out an ever strong space in the industry. The qual card system used to authorise who can do what work is ultimately geared towards keeping employees safe - and not pressuring them to do works (like drilling) that they may not feel comfortable or have the experience to do. Pro-active and capable employees are given opportunities to direct small teams of field staff, have plenty of client interface time, and to be part of a company that will likely grow significantly in the coming years.

Cons

Still finding the right staffing balance. Support staff could be a bit more supportive.

Growing Pains

Pros

Nationwide offices allow for easy transfer opportunities and diverse work. Company feels smaller than it is due to closely connected practice groups and 'one company' effort.

Cons

Culture. Company seemed to struggle with attempts to grow into an international firm. Unique benefits that set Kleinfelder apart, such as the annual Technical Seminar, were suspended when profits shrank in the process, and this made the company seem more impersonal. Culture also varied widely from office to office, discipline, and manager. A common response to change or better benefits included 'Kleinfelder's benefits are in alignment with similar firms." But this response kept them from being a better, much less exemplary, employer, resulting in a continued male-dominated engineering culture that seems woefully behind the times. I left for a company with better work-life balance and diversity of projects, and even took a small pay cut to do so, but the benefits were so much better and the workplace attitude/culture so improved, that it has been a relief.
