Pros

Generally a solid company. Salaries are competitive. Decent opportunities exist for driven individuals. National footprint allows for cross-country mobility for employees interested in relocation.

Cons

Kleinfelder, within individual offices, has a tendency to focus on one industry at a time which leaves it vulnerable to market fluctuations. Hiring binges and staff reductions seem to be the norm.

Pros

Strong team, long history of excellence and good prior management

Cons

Acquired by struggling US firm hoping to expand into Northern market. Management representation by parent firm (regional management) struggles to inspire or engage. Lots of worry about his ability to lead and the future of a parent firm who has seen decline for four years running (when Hood had experienced the opposite)

Pros

While at KF I got to meet and work some genuinely talented scientists and engineers and had the opportunity to make lifelong friends.

Cons

The bloated management/administration was so out of touch with the needs of the employees, particularly those of the junior staff. They bemoan the fact that junior staff retention is so low, but there were few incentives for anyone to stay more than a few years. The pay was very low compared to my peers at other firms and the ESOP only benefited employees who had been there for decades. I hear now that there is 401k matching, but where I was there it was not the case. God forbid you get stuck on an ExxonMobil project because that will be the last you see of any other types of work. KF was EM's lickspittle through and through as it fought for table scraps.
