Pros

Despite what has been written by one particularly bitter individual, the Melbourne office of Kleinfelder is a great place to work. A mid sized consultancy in an open office, there is a strong sense of camaraderie and support. The doors to senior management are always open, and whilst there can be lots of talk and progress can sometimes be slow, there is a genuine feeling of a team that is working to carve out an ever strong space in the industry. The qual card system used to authorise who can do what work is ultimately geared towards keeping employees safe - and not pressuring them to do works (like drilling) that they may not feel comfortable or have the experience to do. Pro-active and capable employees are given opportunities to direct small teams of field staff, have plenty of client interface time, and to be part of a company that will likely grow significantly in the coming years.

Cons

Still finding the right staffing balance. Support staff could be a bit more supportive.

It has been a great learning experience.

Pros

Its great to start out here in the environmental industry because unlike other companies they allow junior level staff to write reports and participate in in the process of determining remedial strategies for sites. There is a culture of learning unlike other companies I have worked for. There is an expectation for employees to try things they may not have done before and to feel comfortable asking questions without fear of being taken off of a task.

Cons

The unit price system is difficult to get used to making it important to keep track of your time while in the office to 15 min intervals. This makes the task of completing your time sheet at the end of each day take sometime 30 min (which is not billable). The learning curve is discouragingly overwhelming at first with many policies to become accustomed to but if you talk to others you'll learn they experienced the same issues at first and overcame them. It is also a bit demeaning for a mid to senior level person with field experience to have to be "trained" to become "qualified" in common field tasks by junior level staff with less experience. Its all well intentioned, just something to get used to.
