New Administration is Destroying Culture

Pros

Excellent culture under previous administration.

Cons

The new administration is more concerned about budget than the welfare of students or staff. They are cutting programs without researching the consequences first. I had students routinely come to me because they did not feel emotionally safe on campus (due to sexual assault and race issues). Lafayette does not believe in merit raises for staff. You will start at a low salary and only get a 2% cost-of-living increase each year. My salary was not enough to live in this area, leaving me no choice but to resign.

Pros

Good salary, opportunity to teach, great 'mental' workout.

Cons

No job security. Management listens to students and not to faculty. Very less power to faculty. Internal politics and nepotism among engineering faculty at least. The politics in engineering department is really crass. Professors fight like students and students have so much more power than professors that I was warned by my colleagues - don't mess (give lower grades) with students. This place is going to humble you down as you will high school graduates wielding the whip on PhDs ! The evaluate you and if your first semester's evaluations are not good - well, you are doomed. I was an immigrant and they fired me just based on my first semester evaluations. My second semester evaluations were good but were not even considered. I was an engineering professor and was not allowed to use laboratories for my research which somewhat killed my research. The laboratory staff taunted me and fought with me, complaining to the chair, who took their sides ! So a very very bad experience. Please avoid at all cost. I had to teach five courses in my first semester and I was like a donkey of teaching ! A summary of everything: the college has student photographs in the hallways instead of the faculty. And whereas faculty have restricted access on weekends, student keys open all doors :)

Pros

Tuition benefits for your kids is a crazy perk. 8% 401k contribution from employer is helpful. Friendly, knowledgeable coworkers. Good time off.

Cons

Definitely paid less than we should be, but also not sacrificing my body or time with family to work. No task here is ever as important as management seems to think.
