Pros
At Ledcor you’ll find good people to work with. There are plenty of policies and guidelines, a variety of good benefits, and periodic events you would expect to find from a large private company. HR tries to create a unique culture by homogenizing the Ledcor experience through mediocre initiatives like True Blue and Ledcor Cares in hopes of creating a sense of belonging.
Cons
What you’ll find is that not all people feel valued and respected and don’t have access to the same opportunities as the majority do. For the silent minority, representation, recognition and support for diversity does not exist. When you peel back the thin veil of people and culture, there are real challenges of diversity without inclusivity. From inappropriate comments leaders make in meetings, to a visible lack of diversity at senior levels, to poorly behaving executives in public, the actions always point to a dominant group of male executives that keep inclusivity suppressed. The social norms established by these executives create “prototypes for success” through individuals that perpetuate a similarity bias and limit the pool of potential candidates for positions, important projects and promotions. Executives are left to manage through their own experiences and backgrounds, creating bias through personal norms, without anyone having the courage to lead on inclusivity. There is no culture of celebrating diversity at Ledcor, not even formal recognition of the diverse workplace that exists, or acknowledgment of the contributions diverse individuals make. Corporate citizenship in this area falls far behind their Vancouver peers like Vancity, SAP, Port of Vancouver, TELUS, YVR, Translink, BCIT, BC Hydro, UBC, Borden Ladner Gervais, and HSBC. It is unlikely this atmosphere will change, unless there are major changes in leadership, behaviour, understanding, and thinking. Individuals who are perceived as being different or less from their supervisors receive differential treatment in forms of less supervisor support, less training, less advancement opportunity, less consideration and lower relationship quality. When a very senior executive was approached on this subject, his response validated the reality for most at Ledcor...”If this company wanted to do something about diversity, it would have done something a long time ago.” If you’re looking for a diverse and inclusive workplace to invest your time, effort and energy in, Ledcor is not the place to start.
