Politics Are King

Pros

In earlier times, was given a lot of independence to make the job my own. Compensation pretty generous for those willing to work hard and who have the opportunity to be recognized. Most employees work hard to maintain a professional and friendly environment.

Cons

As the company grew, more bureaucracy took hold; harder to get things done; every decision had to be made by a "committee". CEO and a couple of EVPs exert all the authority. No decision making ability or authority on any other level. CEO hires friends with questionable abilities and ethics to fill senior positions. Other managers not supported. Lower level employee performance is more lax and not challenged to improve. Managers who challenge them are not supported.

Good for a first opportunity

Pros

A decent amount of flexibility, variety, and opportunities to take on new programs. Most employees are not stuck in departmental silos. Limited support staff and limited oversight means you have a lot of personal control.

Cons

DRS is a good place to start, but it offers limited opportunities to advance. It is less bureaucratic than larger defense firms, but it lacks strong communication to lower level employees.

Good company to work for

Pros

Work is often unique and challenging. Most colleagues are professional and respectful of each other. The quality of benefits are appreciated, dental, medical, 401k matching and tuition assistance among them.

Cons

Some coworkers do not take enough initiative. There is some disconnect at the management level with the needs of the employees. Limited opportunities for career advancement. Office consolidations and build-outs move ridiculously slow.
