Low stress, good for people who want to make a career in fiber

Workload is usually reasonable, most employees on the development/operations side of the house can just put in their hours and go home.

Cons

No opportunity for advancement without a PhD -- and very limited even then. Product scope is extremely limited, so most engineers working here don't build technical skills that would be applicable anywhere except a direct competitor.

Pros

Great people to work with, excellent benefits, solid pay, impressive differentials, 3.5 day work weeks. Management immediately above us was very fair.

Cons

Weak union leaders. Oppressive upper management, they hired a notorious union buster in HR before I left to clean house. Upper management out of touch.

Pros

Good pay and benefits; huge IP portfolio inherited from Bell Labs/Western Electric/AT&T past; for the most part, and my colleagues are great people to work with.

Cons

Too many of the Project Managers can't tell the difference between serious customers and "tire-kickers." As a consequence, too much work is loaded onto the plates of our limited R&D and production staff, and key customers actually willing to spend big $$$ aren't given the proper attention they deserve. In the end, the potential $$$ ends up going elsewhere.
