Pros

Interesting and important projects - you get to build stuff that really matters. Great work-life balance. The vast majority of work weeks have been 40 hour weeks. Salaried employees are eligible for OT pay in most cases. Fair pay and benefits.

Cons

Growth opportunities are sketchy, and seem to be more about who you know, and being in the right place at the right time. Promotions have become almost nonexistent for the last couple of years. This is part of a company acknowledged effort to cut costs. Very bureaucratic. Extremely hard to make positive changes on any of the large programs. Lack of communication and knowledge sharing between teams. None of the fun benefits you'd expect as an engineer in Silicon Valley. If you're young, single, and fresh out of college, there are probably better places to start your career.

Pros

Great work life balance. Co workers in my office worked all their lives at Lockeed, some upto 35 years. That says a lot about employee satisfaction and retention. My office dealt with federal contracts, which translates to more job security, however this changed a bit during the recession.

Cons

Lower compensation compared to industry standards. Less opportunities to grow. Felt like I was doing same work throughout my time there

Pros

Been with LM for nearly a decade. I've had the privilege of having great supervisors who genuinely were concerned about my professional growth, etc. The pay is similar to any of the large DoD contracting firms Benefits are great, however, they are going through some substantial changes to better align with current economic strategies within the US. I'm sure that will continue with the current CEO in place who knows how to pinch a penny and turn it into a profit.

Cons

Can be difficult to find training for specific career fields given the nature of contract work. Some of a the divisions will not pay for training out of overhead and unless the contract specifically states paid training, you can get yourself into a dead-end situation. Promotions can be difficult as well depending on your supervisor and what contract you support; if the contract was bid on certain salary grades you could find yourself in a bad spot.
