Pros

Mission to cure cancer is worthwhile. Providing life-giving treatment to cancer patients is it's own reward. Some of the most brilliant and dedicated oncologists and healthcare professionals in the world work here. Very good employee benefits and excellent retirement plan if you can stay for the long haul.

Cons

The big business of caring has taken a back seat to egos and money. Lack of trust in upper management is at an all time high and getting worse. Fear of retaliation is a problem for a reason. Upper managers seem to think themselves untouchable. Some areas are chronically short staffed and staff have to work in ridiculously tight spaces.

Pros

There is a lot of exciting things going on at MD Anderson. I liked the fact that I was permitted to go attend one of the many lectures and seminars that are going on a daily basis by the center's experts and guest speakers. I would have loved to keep doing it, but it is hard to make it. I left the job to go to pharmacy school.

Cons

Some of the bosses use you for cheap labor and don't teach you anything along the way. Try to get into a laboratory where there's a graduate student that is willing to show you some things. Some of the work can be pretty repetitive. But if you show initiative, your boss or mentor will probably allow you to run a couple projects of your own. Also, it takes awhile to advance in the company, and the pay is not always good. As a research assistant, you could eventually work your way up to lab manager, but now days it seems that they are looking more and more for MBAs and PhDs to run the lab.

Pros

State benefits are good, teachers retirement, wonderful patients and the best cancer tx anywhere. Reseach is impressive and groundbreaking.

Cons

Low morale and finger pointing has replaced core values caring, integrity in past few years. Very political. Be careful if you cross the wrong person. People here have long memories and hold bitter grudges. Some senior managers have a different agenda and it is all about what you do that makes them look good. Credit often goes to those who take credit for it and actually did nothing to deserve it. Blaming is often the name of the game. It is a shame.
