Pros

- Work-life balance. Good benefits. Amazing retirement program. - Strong vision and values to impact government and the public interest - Internal research program can provide new and interesting opportunities outside of government-supporting work. - Great culture with generally helpful people - Recognition for work positively impacts yearly pay increases. "Out of cycle" raises more recently awarded to exceptional people

Cons

- Limited technical career path. "Moving up" generally suggests becoming a group or project lead, or working more with sponsor, but still doesn't encourage a solid technical leadership path. - Underwhelming opportunities to support government work - Extremely "top heavy", not doing enough (and not always enough interesting technical work) to retain talented junior/senior level engineers. - Internal research program funds lackluster projects that sound buzzy but lack substance. Many groups are trying and failing to turn fuzzy concepts into formulas. Gets distracted with imaginary 100% solutions, but fails to take more practical steps that make high impact. - Pay has come a long way, but still not competitive in the security space, especially for cleared employees. - 80% of overall time/effort is spent managing work or convincing government (or internal) of work to be done, but 20% is the workforce contributing to projects. Feels like an inverted pyramid.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. We’re happy to hear you enjoyed your work and work/life balance here. We're currently working on a technical career path initiative to better clarify a path for those interested in advancing their career without moving into management.

Pros

Note: I work at an off-site so i do not get to experience what my colleagues experience at the main east coast sites. -Flexibility and work/life balance is amazing, they value taking time off and most managers work with you so you can get a work schedule that benefits yourself and them. -Most of the work is pretty interesting, it varies from site to site but i find that the aerospace stuff is pretty great. -Good benefits package and education assistance program -If you want to participate in any professional development activities (conferences, certs, classes), it is usually easy to get approval.

Cons

-Red Tape by the truckloads. -Some managers are more political then technical and their decisions greatly impact your work. There has been times where i feel like im working for reason since the current project will change dramatically after one meeting. -Working at a site greatly limits the amount and type of work you get as compared to our HQ. -Managers can sometimes be overworked which limits the mentoring opportunities they can give to us juniors

We are pleased to hear you enjoy MITRE’s work-life balance, benefits and educational assistance offerings. Management is currently looking at how best to make more roles available enterprise-wide as opposed to center- and site-specific.
