Pros

Made some great friendships over 18 years and did some very impactful engineering work. For the work that Mitre employees do, they have a great deal. The parking lot is practically empty on a Friday. Most of the competent engineers have left in the past 3-5 years.

Cons

Since the current CEO has taken over, the company has deteriorated. managers are just sucking up to those above them. If anyone speaks out, their life is made miserable and they are pushed out. Recently about 15% of VPs, directors and managers were suddenly cut on a Friday, some after 20-40 years at the company. Yes, some of them needed to be let go while others were very capable. Some managed to survive but should have been cut. Many incompetent middle level managers . The CEO needs to be removed. The board needs to step in and hire a capable CEO who will truly manage the company as an engineering company. The MITRE hourly rates are way too high and thus the company is not competitive on an hourly rate basis and also on a work impact basis for the government customers. Existing staff are finding themselves without project work. You have to fend for yourself. Too many layers of management like group leaders, project leaders,co-department managers, department managers and on and on and on. You get the picture. Many who are age 50 and above are just trying to make it to retirement age with just doing the minimum. You will definitely lose your skills if you join Mitre and you will not be able to find another job. In te past 3 years I managed to get hands-on technical skills that are marketable across multiple job sectors.

Pros

Working in the public interest and work life balance

Cons

It seems very difficult to keep track of the officers vision. They are great sound bites but the implementation is unclear.
