      Working at MITRE is mostly pretty good

      Pros

      As a technical center employee, there is a lot of variety of important and interesting work. MITRE work is for the public interest, which is good, because it is shared with industry and government A lot of very intelligent and good people to work with Decent benefits, although they have decreased over the years

      Cons

      Upward mobility is difficult. It is not enough to be very good at your job and perform well. It is quite difficult to get promoted. Many people leave MITRE and then come back in order to get a promotion. Pay is not that great. And raises are not that great. In spite of excellent reviews and being a consistent performer for 14 years, I haven't had a raise in six years and never been promoted.

      Pros

      Breadth of interesting work, quality of peers, retirement benefits, and work schedule flexibility. This is an environment that truly values *quality* work, something that can be hard to find in industry or at government contractor organizations.

      Salaries are on the low end of spectrum, and the health care packages are pricey,

      Pros

      MITRE has some of the most passionate, mission-focused employees I have ever worked with in my career. The benefits for retirement are exceptional. Senior management is very thoughtful and caring about the workforce. The combined talent of the workforce is impressive.

      Cons

      Benefits are great, but skewed in value towards those further along in their careers. Pay is fair when considering base pay includes what most private sector companies pay separately as bonus and is not at risk as long as you are performing and contributing as expected. Pay banding at MITRE can be limiting to promotions and percieved advancement for those who are junior in their careers. Unfortunately, MITRE is a federally funded research and development center and is at the whim of its constituent's sponsors and Congress' budget battles.
