Pros

Lots of autonomy, interesting work, working in the national interest. Working with smart, passionate people. Good work life balance. Within the Centers there is the ability to move around.

Cons

Asked to do cutting edge work for industry standard salary and benefits. Doesn't seem like there's much project growth in Bedford, MA. Emphasis seems to be on DC area.

MITRE losing it way

Pros

as an FFRDC (actually a holding company for multiple FFRDCs), MITRE _should_ appeal to technologists who are willing to sacrifice top-end wages for a job where they can have an impact (bad taste word when it comes to MITRE's FAA sponsor :-)) on government programs. opps, that doesn't sound all that "pro".

Cons

Under CEO Al Grasso and his push for "business" in non-DoD "customers", in the opinion of many MITRE employees, MITRE has lost it way. Now it is unlikely that a manager would walk away from "non-MITRE work". Has MITRE become just another Beltway Bandit? Sadly, the answer seems to be yes, unless Grasso chooses founding principles over his "lunch bunch"'s desire to follow in the footsteps of former CEO Barry "The Barry" Horowitz (sp?).

Just like everyone else--a body shop focused on heads and revenue.

Pros

Better than average pay; average benefits; not particularly demanding schedules.

Cons

A "good ol' boys and girls" network of managers that places high stock in BS coupled with little concern for delivering quality services to federal agencies. As an FFRDC, MITRE was chartered to be an honest broker to the government, to include bringing assistance to agencies that lack the depth or breadth of talent to address internal concerns. Rather than focusing assistance on how to really help agencies deliver better value for taxpayers, the company regrettably uses its FFRDC status to feed off the weaknesses they were retained to rectify. Emphasis is on increasing revenue and protecting company headcount.
