Pros

Pay is excellent (although the common wisdom is that the pay is higher at for-profit entities in the community like Meta and Amazon). Benefits reasonable for the region.

Cons

MITRE has been in a period of transition and uncertainty since before the pandemic. Cost-saving measures have lowered morale. Federal sponsors are not as supportive and enthusiastic as they were historically. Very few opportunities to pursue high-level executive positions for non-engineers such as legal, policy, and business process specialists. Diversity and Inclusion efforts are largely perfunctory and designed to maintain the status quo, but I find this to be true about most corporate employers.

Pros

The work-life balance is excellent and the pay is competitive in light of it. The work can be very interesting and nationally significant.

Cons

The prior CEO broke a lot of things, running from business tools to corporate culture. The experience isn’t what it used to be but small, positive changes are occurring. Other cons are the traditional ones: no bonuses, chasms between resource managers and project leaders, misplaced attitudes towards the FFRDC mission, subjectivity and personal biases entering into staff performance reviews, etc.
