Great Mission, Great Employees, Horrible Leadership

Pros

My colleagues are incredible & the work at MITRE is unique and fulfilling. My department manager really cares about my well-being, career growth, and what I need to make the most impact with our government sponsors.

Cons

C-suite leadership is HORRIBLE! They are completely out of touch with reality. They love to make comments to us about how we should not care about our pay and focus on the mission. They cut benefits and show no empathy. And they enforce RTO with no justification other than "the data says RTO is better", but refuse to show us this data. The only thing keeping me at this company is my colleagues, and every time C-suite speaks to us I want to quit.

Pros

-On paper, MITRE has the same mission - to be the good faith intermediary between the government and the contracting companies. - Getting to work with and be mentored by some of the smartest engineers you could hope to meet - Historically great benefits ... now average for new employees and below average for those with seniority.

Cons

Where do I start ... - Gas lighting from upper management. Long term employees benefits geot massively cut while multiple new VP positions are created. We're told the cuts are for "equity" but the company managed for decades without those VP positions. Doesn't take much math skills to figure out where the budget for our vacation & community service time went. - Lack of support from middle management. Multiple reports about hostile work conditions due to a customer Chief Engineer were ignored until I took a leave of absence . My MITRE manager had to step in and deal with said Chief Engineer and, miracle of miracles, my entire team was pulled out shortly after. Eight months of reporting that CE and his horrible behavior and my MITRE manager lasted less than four weeks dealing with him. - On your own for finding project coverage. Overhead charge numbers are non-existence and it's up to you, using your own networks, to find decent work. If you can't, you'll be pressured to use your vacation time to cover the shortfalls.

Pros

mission/impact people (decreasing) benefits (decreasing) stability(decreasing) flexibility loyalty and dedication of people (decreasing as they leave)

Cons

Current leadership is seriously out of touch or is intentionally trying to drive away people with more than 5 years invested in the company. Communication is terrible. The CEO provides conflicting information from what is distributed. They waffle on decisions, execute poorly in a way to undermine confidence. Currently messaging says the company "had the best year ever" yet seems to be scrambling to try and reduce costs. The company doesn't seem to have an issue getting revenue, but they definitely have an issue over spending, particularly on internal investments focused under the labs construct. They seem to double down on failures vs. accepting that it was perhaps a bad idea and adjusting course.
