Command and Control from the CEO Down and Across the Org

Business Outlook

Pros

Decent benefits. Reasonable working hours and policies.

Cons

The CEO is smug, snarky, tone deaf, and genuinely un-empathetic to employee concerns. Even when 800+ employees consistently provide shared feedback and concerns, he and the VPs are flippant and dismissive. The org follows the CEO’s lead, and egos drive success even more than the missions. Leaders are largely managing by command and control and several employees that I know personally have been let go or punished for questioning or disagreeing with their management. Policies change continuously and it is difficult to keep up. The CEO is adamantly against teleworking and hybrid work is considered less effective than being in office. Teleworking agreements originally had no expiration date. At some point over the last 2 years, the policy changed affecting all existing and all new teleworkers, which requires teleworking agreements to be reviewed annually; if the agreement is not renewed the employee has a year to figure out if they’re leaving or moving closer to campus in Bedford, MA or McLean, VA.

RTO - last gasp of a failed, lame duck CEO

Business Outlook

Pros

Important, impactful work in support of warfighters and working alongside top caliber co-workers and first-line managers. Good salary and 401K, but nothing stellar.

Cons

Truly the worst executive leadership team out there. The disgraced CEO is retiring, but taking 11 months to do so when he should have been fired for running morale, financials, and respect of sponsors into the ground. FAR TOO MANY NEW EXECUTIVES at MITRE who don't listen to employees. Eroding benefits. Civic time reduced by 80%. Leave reduced. No sick days. No funding available for professional development. Secret layoffs. Draconian return-to-office policy for company that was highly productive working remotely. Corporate surveys show consistent steady decline in morale and confidence of leadership. Nobody listening at the top.

Poor communication, hurtful changes

Business Outlook

Pros

There's a great opportunity of make an impact and to do work you want to do. You can learn and grow and change career directions, if wanted.

Cons

Corporate management has rolled out a series of poorly communicated changes over the past couple of years. All of these changes have been detrimental to employees but advertised as "good" or "equitable". The CEO makes snide comments about people during company wide meetings and has visibly lost his temper when asked to explain his actions. No one feels valued or appreciated anymore. Except for the VPs, since we seem to hire a new one every month.
