Finally a new CEO

Pros

Today the Board announced the new CEO will take over in September. With an 11% approval, it's unfortunate that they didn't act sooner, but I'm optimistic that the new leader will help steer us back on track. MITRE remains a good place to work, thanks to the researchers at MITRE (who haven't already left) that are top notch experts in their fields and are the reason I'm still here. The folks in middle management (GLs, DHs, and Directors) are also good advocates for their staff and are doing the best they can within the constraints imposed by the outgoing CEO and hopefully several of his SLT.

Cons

The recent aggressive moves to increase in-office time regardless of whether the work necessitates in-person collaboration has been frustrating. Many times I've commuted to the office only to spend the day on Teams/Zoom meetings and not interact with any other staff. The SLT gave us Juneteenth as a holiday for 1 year, then took it back and also tried to take away Labor day (but Massachusetts law prevented that bone-headed policy). In my time there, they've taken away nearly a week of vacation (a couple days in 2011 and a couple more days last year). The most recent reduction in benefits was taken away from those who had been at MITRE for 9 or more years and reallocated to make vacation "equitable" with an increase in time for those with no time in service. If felt like they were punishing the senior staff in hopes folks would leave, so they could replace them with less expensive junior staff. Many senior folks have left over the past 18 months and I feel this has led to lower quality products.

MITRE Response

Thank you for your dedication to MITRE and taking the time to share your thoughts and concerns. Your feedback is invaluable, and we appreciate your optimism about the future of MITRE and your appreciation for our talented researchers and managers. We are a diverse, and multi-generational organization with benefits intended to meet employees where they are in their personal and professional careers. As part of those benefit programs, we offer a flexible work model that fosters both in-person and digital opportunities for employees to connect with the added benefit of in-office and remote flexibility. Our program allows staff to flex their 80-hour pay-period time as needed with only 50% of their time required in an office setting. We are committed to consistently reviewing our benefits programs to ensure they are relevant and meet the needs of our staff and mission. We recently modernized our paid time off benefit to be more equitable across all our staff by providing the same number of paid days off regardless of tenure. Now, from our newest employee to our most senior tenured, all staff have equal access to partake in the paid time off they deserve. We recognize that our employees are as diverse in background as they are in observances and holidays significant to them. Our staff are provided seven paid holidays a year, and in addition, we offer one floating holiday per year that staff can use to celebrate any observance that is meaningful to them, such as Juneteenth. We appreciate your candid feedback and will continue to strive for excellence in all we do. Thank you again for your dedication to MITRE and for being part of our team.

Pros

Some interesting work. Retirement matching OK for now.

Cons

Retirement funds reduced. Vacation reduced. Medical benefits have deteriorated every year since I got here. CEO is arrogant and apparently in the thrall of second rate management consultants. Once great, respected Engineering company.

Pros

Pay is fair for government work (Way under commercial sector) Flexible work hours Retirement matching

Cons

*Leadership is completely disconnect from reality of work force. *Continuing to hire even though they can't keep enough work for current staff *Return to Office Policy - Forces EVERYONE back in purely numbers. Employees with remote projects which are not at the local sites are still forced to come in. Just to find an empty office and work remotely. *Pulling daily badge swipes and keeping a log/evidence of those not complying. Honestly could fire people over it tomorrow with no warning and no consideration of performance. *Employee attrition rate for senior and lead engineers is staggering, Many are leaving for equal pay just to get out.
