Pros

The People. The quality of employee that works at MITRE is the highest I’ve seen at any company I’ve worked for. They are deeply committed to their mission. - The work. The mission of working in the public interest is an integral part of helping the government succeed in its goal of serving the American public. The types of work and projects MITRE leads are critical to the national interest. It’s a very fulfilling job.

Cons

Executive Leadership. Having worked at MITRE for over 15 years I’ve been through multiple phases of leadership. The current leadership team is the only time that I’ve been concerned about the direction of the company and its future. Under the current CEO’s leadership, MITRE has taken on a significant amount of new overhead costs. In the last 5-6 years, leadership has significantly expanded the corporate facilities footprint. Additionally, the CEO has increased overhead/indirect costs by increasing executive leadership and adding new VPs. Yet, despite the company’s “great financial health” the CEO decided to cut corporate benefits in a draconian manner which has reduced total compensation significantly. Despite this, merit increases have been less than the cuts in benefits. Given the current state of inflation, total compensation has decreased compared to cost of living. When any valid and thoughtful questions are asked about the decisions and changes being made during COVID and recently, the CEO has been very dismissive and irritated that anyone would ask for data or more information. The gaslighting of the employee base has been frustrating. The majority of MITRE employees have lost confidence in the executive leadership team. The knee jerk reactions guiding decision making have been hard to see. It’s unfortunate because it may lead to loss of quality employees at MITRE.

MITRE Response

Thank you for the candid and thoughtful feedback - it is always a priority at MITRE to hear from our staff and identify ways in which we can continue to earn and enhance the trust and confidence of our talented workforce. Any decision regarding modifications to the benefits package we provide to employees is taken very seriously as we know how important these benefits are to our multi-generational workforce. We recognize that the recent modifications to our benefits are challenging and impact our people in a variety of ways. The CEO and executive leadership team share in these challenges and recognize that each of us have individual preferences as to which benefit is most important to us at any given point in our life and career. As an organization committed to operate in the public interest, leadership has the responsibility to evaluate the needs of all of our employees collectively while balancing our obligation to remain affordable and position the company to remain a cost-effective solution provider for the government going into the future. These decisions are part of our company’s long-term strategy to meet our mission, preserve our employee's benefits were possible, while appropriately managing the government and public dollars we are entrusted with. Decisions of this nature are never easy, and leadership analyzed and assessed all internal and external factors, including the current uncertainty of the economic environment and shifting federal budgets. As a learning organization, we will continue to review the methods by which we communicate to our staff to ensure that we continuously improve how information is shared. We remain committed to all of our employees and the incredible work they do each and every day to solve problems for a safer world.
