Pros

Exciting work. Opportunities to make a difference. Good collaboration at the working level.

Cons

CEO makes disparaging remarks about staff, showing his elitist’s distain for anyone who even asks simple questions about the wisdom of some policies. For a not-for-profit company, we are focus more on obtaining more contracts than ensuring that the work we are doing is quality. Will not invest into new capabilities other than sexy new tech like AI, thus we have nothing to offer and attract more substantial projects. So accustom to suckling off the government nipple that as funding is drying up, the company has no idea how to proceed (i.e., invest). So, to make the budget balance, employee benefits are taking it in the shorts.

Pros

Local management is pretty good but has virtually no influence to mitigate bad policies pushed down by executive leaders.

Cons

Zero accountability for bad decision making by executive leaders. Consequences for their lack of budget oversight are distributed to employees in the form of cuts to benefits. Salaries and benefits (i.e. total compensation) are not keeping up with competitors. Executive leaders seem to think they can gaslight employees into believing their compensation package is still competitive when it’s clearly not. Unsurprisingly, the majority of the high performing staff are either eyeing the door or have already left.

Pros

Good colleagues. Excellent benefits despite recent cuts.

Cons

MITRE has lost its way. Executive leadership is laser focused on growth and alignment with left-leaning political agendas. This has caused much of our company overhead to be devoted to improving social causes such as social justice reform and climate change with no clear explanation why a system’s engineering company operating FFRDCs should be involved with this type of work. Millions have been poured into initiatives with seemingly zero ROI except a new tainted reputation for political bias and lost objectivity. Millions were poured into company platforms with negligible results. The concept of building true value for the average American instead of a utopian vision crafted by elites is lost on the current C suite. We need drastic change to right this ship. Instead we see doubling down on the same pursuits and policies that led us here. The poison of “wokeness” appears here to stay with an almost obsessive focus on diversifying employees and leadership based on people’s immutable characteristics alone. Lip service is paid to the idea of merit based promotion and advancement while the true celebration and focus is on arbitrary diversity stats.
