Thanks for your review. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoy MITRE’s people and that you had the opportunity to work on interesting projects that are making a difference. We encourage you to look for ways to make your work more collaborative; speak with your manager about how he/she can help. We also recommend talking to your supervisor or one of the social intern chairs to find out about social activities.

Pros

Great benefits, great work/life balance, and some really fun and interesting projects. You have freedom to move around the company, work on different things from year to year, and really have an impact on our federal government and the public interest. If you are the kind of person who values variety in your work, serving the public interest, and have a thick skin then you'll love it here.

Cons

Like any big company, there are politics. Since this is government work, there's more politics than most. Pay is also not always competitive with industry, specifically where software engineers are concerned. Each super-organization (called Centers) within the company runs like its own business, which leads to unrest and in-fighting within the company. People are evaluated differently from Center to Center, values are different from Center to Center, and there's lots of turf wars.

Thank you for your feedback. Our mission to work in the public interest is one that inspires many employees. We’re happy to hear that you enjoy MITRE’s benefits as well. Each center is sponsored by a different government organization, which sometimes leads to differences within the operation of that center. While each center may have unique projects, they also continue to seek ways to collaborate, particularly on work that cuts across all our centers.

part reputiable and part disturbing...

Pros

Some very intelligent, savvy and motivated engineers with access to industry-leading technology. Ideally, an opportunity to make an impact on major, national initiatives.

Cons

Depending on what part of the organization within which you work, your experience may be miserable. No standards with regards to management and treatment of employees. Some people work hard, some people barely work at all -- and some people who do close to nothing - make large salaries, hold positions of high responsibility, and go completely unchallenged by the "system".

Thank you for your feedback. MITRE is proud to have a talented workforce and an important mission. MITRE’s managers do read the Voice of the Employee survey comments and take them very seriously. We appreciate that you take the time to participate in the survey and hope that some of the changes you are seeking are implemented.
