Pros

Macy's Herald Square is one of the busiest retail locations in the world, which is a huge plus if you're in a commission-based role. The high foot traffic translates directly into more sales opportunities and higher earning potential. My manager was genuinely supportive, approachable, and made the day-to-day environment pleasant to work in.

Cons

Workplace safety was a consistent concern during my time on the floor. The store is open to everyone, and aggressive individuals frequently entered the premises, creating uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe situations for employees and customers alike. Security response in these moments was often slow, leaving staff to manage the situation on their own. This was stressful and should be taken more seriously by store leadership. While my manager was supportive on a personal level, conflict within the team was rarely addressed directly, which sometimes allowed small issues to linger longer than necessary. On the career development side, training was limited to once a year and focused almost exclusively on new product launches and brand information — helpful for product knowledge, but not for building broader professional skills. Employees looking to grow beyond their current role may find the learning opportunities lacking.

Pros

You learn strong customer service skills and how to deal with all kinds of people under pressure.

Cons

Working at Macy's was exhausting, frustrating, and honestly, not worth the stress. The company expects way too much from employees while giving very little in return. You're constantly understaffed, overworked, and still expected to perform like everything is running smoothly. Management was one of the biggest issues; there's a clear disconnect between leadership and employees. Communication is poor, expectations are unrealistic, and when things go wrong, it feels like employees are the ones blamed instead of the system. Support is minimal, and appreciation is almost nonexistent. The pressure to push credit cards and sales is constant and uncomfortable, even though I was the best in my location it's less about genuinely helping customers and more about hitting numbers, which takes away from the actual shopping experience. It can feel very forced and unnatural. Scheduling is inconsistent, making it hard to maintain any kind of work-life balance. One week, you might get decent hours, the next, you're barely scheduled, with little notice or stability. Overall, the environment feels draining more than anything. You'll definitely learn patience and how to deal with various kinds of situations, but it comes at the cost of your energy and peace. Unless something changes with how employees are treated, this isn't a place I would recommend long-term
