Pros

Macy's Home store believed in providing an opportunity for one to rise up the ranks with all the proper training and mentorship needed through each person's individual career development plan. Many different programs and classes supplemented my on-the-job training and was accessible to me via in class training and also behind my desk personal training, both available for my use anytime. Not only did they have a very strong infrastructure, they had a very strong team which emphasized working together while stil in a competitive environment and many providing opportunities for 2-way communication between upper management and subordinates. Along with that comment, the people cared about you. A great emphasis was placed on respect, which translated in to upper management being more than just bosses, but mentors.

Cons

Macy's Home Store unfortunately does not have training or easy bridges for those who want to get into Ready to Wear or other division such as Product Development. Therefore, if you don't like home products--then it would be difficult to fully embrace the career development program. However, mentors and bosses do want to help you get what you want and get to your goals. The other downside of Macy's Home Store is that you can grow very comfy here and you might not feel challenged at times because you only make it as challenging as you want to. Meaning, most bosses do not yell and scream at you for work to get done and sometimes, a lack of urgency could be felt if there is no personal drive or passion for the job you are doing.

Pros

It's a stable job, at least where I work. I'm not on the selling floor, I think the sales associates probably get treated worse. The benefits are average, same as most places. They do have a 20% store discount for employees, but you have to use your Macy's employee credit card to get the discount and pay off the balance before it is due to avoid getting charged high interest rates.

Cons

The hours are typical retail...expect to work on weekends and all major holidays. They only give you off on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The other Federal holidays they give to you as "floating holidays", which is really just a personal day that you can request to take off. The salary I am making is not that good, and their pay raises are below average. A lot of employees and management seem to be unhappy a great deal as well. Opportunities for advancement are far and few between. Macy's is also notorious for its penny-pinching, they are generally a cheap company to work for. Expect very little in rewards and recognition for this company and you will not be disappointed!
