Pros

You meet some great people. Loved working here because of the flexibility, and coworkers. You get to be by yourself most of the time, because management is not always around.

Cons

You have to be able to learn quickly because the training sucks. You have to figure out things on your own a lot of the times since there’s not enough support. There’s not a lot of recognition for doing a good job or growth to move up. The managers don’t really care about their employees. Their system is very old fashioned, you have to explain to people how the coupon/rewards work, so people often get upset if you can’t give them a discount on items that are already on sale. You don’t get a lot of breaks. They expect you to put away items in dressing rooms which becomes very messy since customers aren’t being told how many items can be taken into dressing rooms but when you have a long line of people buying stuff, you can’t always get to it so it just piles up.

Pros

Pretty much no supervision, up to you if you wanted to get any work done. Many sales people would just wander the store/hide out.

Cons

Their “commission” tactic should be illegal, not sure if they still scam staff the way they did when I worked there? They paid a base minimum wage that they claimed was way more with sales commission. 1% of sales I rung up went towards commission BUT I had to cover my full hourly wages first with that 1% before I’d get extra $. Any items from other departments did not count towards my % as well as items from my department rung up elsewhere did not count. They also CHARGE INTEREST on deficits if you don’t cover your hourly pay, you WILL NEVER see a dime of commission! The manager showed me fake spreadsheets totally misleading me about this when I was hired, was confirmed by coworkers I asked. Would have to ring up over $7k in products to cover a single shifts base pay, if I rang up $5k it was a very busy day, most days would be around $1500. The rare moments I did see managers they’d tell me to go work in other departments or assist merchandise crews which meant I would get no credit towards my deficit. Had to decide whether to disobey them or put myself in more debt. Some staff in my department had deficits over $20k, it was a joke to them, I was offended by the whole concept. Was by far the worst job I’ve ever had. I pity anyone who works there and find it satisfying to see how many stores have shut down since I quit. I left after 1 month.

Pros

- Nice employee discount - Camaraderie with co-workers

Cons

Working at Macy's was dehumanizing. Sales policies seem to have been designed to pit co-workers against each other in a way that prevents them from leveraging collective power in order to improve working conditions. Management did nothing in the way of creating basic guidelines for sales that would prevent conflict in a commission-driven environment, and at the same time gave so little in base pay that employees would sabotage one another in the interest of a marginal 1% commission. Workers are not allowed to wear supportive shoes, to sit or even lean for hours at a time, subject to unpredictable schedules, and told during morning "rally" that they are replaceable and so not to expect better treatment. Middle management was incompetent and petty, while upper management seemed intentionally cruel. Credit card sales seemed predatory. Absolutely would not recommend.
