Pros

The main office is in NYC and you want to work in retail.

Cons

Used to be a good place to work until the company consolidated in 2009. Now there is no unified culture, a mix between 70% awful managers and 30% great managers. Apparently all of the good managers left. No upward feedback for management, so awful managers will always remain awful managers. Company has a hard time sharing best practices. Post-consolidation organization is LEAN....so expect to put in a lot of hours. Post-consolidation there is relatively no training for new hires aka a CD-ROM. I worked at Macy's for two years. First year was great - was on a team with strong management. Second year with (new) boss was completely unbearable. Promptly left and never looked back!

Pros

You will find the honesty and integrity of management inspiring at your next workplace.

Cons

Unlike other retailers, Macy's does not appear to me to genuinely enjoy serving the intrinsic needs of their customers. Macy's appears motivated solely by financial return on investment - the result of the pressure from their heavy debt load. Product prices, coupons, and credit card incentives are all gimmicks to trick customers and pillage wallets. In return, customers disrespect Macy's by returning used clothing, demanding unreasonable discounts, and even damaging the physical building. A sad circle. A race to the bottom. An environment of despair.

Pros

*Get to learn Product development at a major vertical retailer *Overall good group of people to work with *Ability to move around to different areas and learn different aspects of retail

Cons

*Promotion is not based on skill, some areas social promotion taken to the extreme. HR sells it to you one way and then you find out if you're not liked well enough you're stuck in the same position for years with modest pay increases/ *Work-life balance is a scam; only for senior and upper management. A product manager wanted to work 4 days a week after having a baby and have her associate travel instead of her since she's breast feeding, VP said no.
