Pros

- The people, while overworked and stressed, are great - The sample sales are pretty good - If you work in Home, you get a pretty big desk

Cons

While I was working at Macy's, they went through a massive restructure - people were given completely new roles and titles, other were laid-off, and others simply quit because they got completely screwed over in the reshuffling. I really lost all my respect for the company when this happened. Buyers who had been successful for years in their role had been moved to completely different businesses and were forced to relearn their business at the busiest time of year: Q4. It was awful. I left because I wanted to pursue another passion, but of my EDP class of 30, only a handful remained. Macy's does not foster growth because they don't care about their employees as individuals. And the restructure made this all to apparent.

Pros

Good department managers. Willing to dig in and work beside you when busy.

Cons

HR protects Macy's while requiring associates to sign severance documents absolving the store of legal responsibility for any and everything. Your met with blank stares and "that is outside of my authority" when you ask what your financial settlement will be. The minute the store closed associates were blocked and unable to access their information on Macy's internal web site. There is no way to know if you were properly compensated for unused vacation time, hours worked and what your actual severance was. I understand this is good for the stock holders but is an insult to associates who stuck with the store to the very end.

Pros

Very poor educational support – about the only training provided was internal and not very good (and usually not technical). Their technology is lagging – a lot of this is due to the tight margins any retail operations runs under – even in a good eco environment. Very little management process / procedures, which they compensate by having lots and lots of unproductive meetings doing dog and pony shows (one positive to this, I got really good at powerpoint slides). If you have a disability, this is a company to avoid – a lot of paperwork that even the EEOC discourages in their policies – and they deny some disability accommodations that other companies do as a normal course of business for everyone (i.e., telecommute, or if you are in the office you are still allowed to call into a meeting bridge – as mentioned before, they are big on not just meetings, but physically being present regardless if you have anything to contribute or gain.)
