Pros

I like the people and it is challenging to coach and groom associates. Solid people and structured hiring to find decent people. (Only hire for yourself, not other managers Please!) Big focus on credit and the coaching binder. If you are in a good Store there are opportunities, if you are in a small store, be ready to settle

Cons

I did not sign up to do book reports each week. I have 35 associates and the expectation is that I will spend time doing activities with them each week and then go and write reports on what I have done. All this in addition to regular job duties....while being coached on expectations by learning and development people who had never been in your shoes. PAY ME, I manage 10M in sales, my salary is less than a half percent of the sales that I am responsible for. Expectations are set a year in advance. They can plan to do high growth in vendors and when something outside of your control goes wrong you are still responsible for those results which drive your reviews and determine your raises. Why do I get penalized when I am out trending last year but not making plan because someone in the district office had lofty expectations for a vendor and it didnt turn out?

Pros

Great people to work with in a fast paced environment during the sales and holiday season. You meet some great people and ... then some not so great people

Cons

They don't train anyone enough in this place, not associates, not managers and not even their support assocciates. They have all kinds of loopholes to keep things under wrap so that managers keep their jobs and this makes it all the more difficult to work here. Their HR dept is corrupt and inneffective, a lot of their managers are needed to go back into training--as sales associates! There were unresolved issues and managers were innappropriate a lot, yet they always kept their jobs and positions. They expect too much of other specific associates and only acknowledged the associates that kissed up to the managers. I wouldn't recommend this job to my worst enemy, this company is a joke and a disappointment. Not enough back up, the managers make associates look incompetent and stupid in front of customers. Over the years, their integrity and mission have truly taken a turn for the worse. Every dept was always understaffed at closing and yet they expected so much more than was possible. I cannot stress it enough, if you are looking to work retail; GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! this job is a nightmare and you get so much older the longer you are there. I feel bad for anyone working there because of how hostile the environment is. Macy's, i will never ever go back to you! This job is not worth the time, effort or the stress you put into it.

Pros

Sales jobs at macys help employees develop the ability to interact with customers in ways that cannot be learned anyywhere but in a fast paced many customer environment. If an employee is intellecutally curious (most are not) they can learn significant knowledge about products, production, pricing, and human behaviour. To do this one must think for oneself and not believe all the company propaganda as truth.

Cons

Management is attempting to save on long term employment costs by firing as many people as possible via methods such as strict time keeping standards that do not accept doctors notes, show storms, family death as excuses. Employees are often treated in demeaning manners. Store manager Kathy Weaver was so vile in her treatment of people in our store that many worked on the selling floor in tears. She threatened to fire people almost daily. Weaver also strictly rationed food at company events. Employees were constantly monitored. Extreme favoritism. Macy's only wants newly hired people. The longer that one works there, the worse that they are treated. Management bonuses maximized at government expense. They take the tax incentives to hire new people , pay very little, and push experienced tenured people to the door. Payroll costs go down, bonuses go up, and more of our staff are on medicaid & food stamps. We have had homeless people on staff.
