A great past, an unclear future.

Pros

There are not many places to work where one can combine their passion for music and technology. A wonderful talented group of people with a great love for what they do. Coming into work every morning has never been a chore. If you share both of these passions, it can be very tempting to want to join the company (if you are willing to accept the cons).

Cons

The outlook for the future of the company is cloudy as it has struggled to find a direction over the past several years. It has undergone even more drastic (and bizarre) changes since going private, such as sacking over half of its employees and relocating the company to combine it with another that specializes in athletic training software. At this point, it requires a leap of faith in the new owner/management and a willingness to venture into unknown territory with potential volatility (much like a startup). Also, the compensation is not as competitive compared to other places.

Perfect job for musicians with a technical background

Pros

It's rewarding to work on music notation software used by professional composers, arrangers, copyists, and teachers. Finale needs to handle sophisticated composing and engraving requirements, and it's fun and challenging to make sure those sophisticated features work correctly. It's also fun working with such talented musicians across all types of musical performance. Music is all about collaboration, and the musicians working here know how to collaborate to get the job done with a minimum of conflict or office politics.

Cons

Too much churn in upper management, making it hard to keep product focus. Particularly true now that the office is relocating to Colorado.

Pros

Great benefits package, good camaraderie with fellow employees, relaxed dress code, upper management is very accessible and friendly.

Cons

Low salaries, no windows in some office areas, little appreciation for self-starting and independent work, micromanagement and lack of trust from supervisors, very little positive feedback for good work.
