Pros

Some of the people at MI are friendly and outgoing. It's a big recognizable brand name to have on your resume.

Cons

It's an absolute mess of an org. The operating model is insane. Over 3,000 different teams providing IT support inconsistently. Finding support where you need it is nearly impossible. Most of the simplest most trivial things (lift and shifts, system builds, security reviews, etc.) take multiple quarters to do. This is not a proactive thoughtful group; reactive firefighting and hyper escalation is how anything gets done. The burn out risk is very high and leaders are all so isolated in silos that few know what is going on. Zero project prioritization occurs, so everything is urgent. They use SAFE Agile but it's an incredibly clumsy and isolated series of micro-deployments of the practice. Every day feels like a reinvention of a wheel where seemingly there is no known process for anything. Marriott is not a good place for high performing IT professionals to come to work. The culture and norms will eat a high performer alive since high performance is so contrary to the norm; the demand for the high performer will drive them into burn out and work life balance issues.

Pros

- Good benefit package - Opportunities to grow within the company - Opportunities to easily transfer/grow at any property worldwide

Cons

- Corporate offices leave almost all functions related to managing people to the individual property and rely on executives to report workplace moral and culture. This leads to massive oversigt and corrupted incentive structures. - No ability to negotiate salary unless you are in a very high ranking role. - Little regard/respect for lower ranking staff's time and work-life balance. - A lot of examples of unqualified people moving up due to connections and charisma. - Culture of protecting execs at the expense of admins, non-management, and lower management. - Voices are shut down when expressing any level of burnout or concern about inefficient processes.

Pros

Before the Marriott family withdrew from the company, Marriott supported the employees and created an atmosphere where an employee was part of the family and felt as if their efforts contributed to Marriott's success. The travel benefits are very nice for the employees and their families.

Cons

Afterwards, the Member Services Division became metrics driven versus customer service driven. The newly applied metrics required a rep to attempt to resolve an issue within approximately five minutes. If the call could not be resolved within the time constraints, the rep was required to expedite the complaints, no matter the seriousness of the complaint, to any number of various specialty groups. Otherwise the rep's statistics would be downgraded. In other words, the rep had no choice but to not service the complaint appropriately. The members would call back saying that no one resolved their issue. In addition, the pandemic created a phenomenon of people from every walk of life calling in to angrily vent with customer services representatives. The calls became simply outrageous. No amount of money makes this type of position worthwhile. This environment can only lead to dissatisfied members and loss of business.
